Oil properties

The Chamomile Roman essential oil has a sweet, apple-like fragrance and is a very light clear blue in color. Its viscosity is watery.

The Chamomile German essential oil is sweet, straw-like in fragrance, is dark blue in color and its viscosity is medium.

Origin of chamomile Roman
A native to England, it is now cultivated in Germany, France and Morocco.

It is a small, stocky perennial of about 30 cm (1 foot) high that has fine feathery leaves and daisy-like white flowers with a yellow center and tiny petals.

Chamomile German

Cultivated in France, Morocco and Spain, German chamomile is similar to Roman chamomile, just with smaller flowers and fewer petals.

Known to the English as 'maythen', it is one of the oldest known medicinal herbs.

Derived from the Greek word meaning 'ground apple' and the Latin word 'nobilis', referring to a noble flower, it certainly is a plant of many uses

To the Egyptians it was a herb dedicated to the sun to cure fevers and to the moon for its cooling ability.

It was also recognized as a soother of nervous complaints and used in shampoos, cosmetics and perfumes.

Chamomile contains Azulene, a powerful anti-inflammatory agent. This blue crystal is not actually present in the plant, but forms in the oil and only a small quantity is needed.

Extraction

Both the Chamomile Roman and German oil is extracted from the flowers by steam distillation. The chamomile Roman yields 1.7% from fresh flowers and chamomile German 0.2-0.4% also from the fresh flowers.

The main chemical components of chamomile Roman oil are: Angelic, Methacrylic, Butyric and Tiglic Acids, Azulene.

The main chemical components of chamomile German oil are: Farnesene, Cuminic and Azulene.

Precautions

Both are considered non-toxic and non-irritant, yet since they can be used as an emmenagogue, it should be avoided during pregnancy.

Therapeutic properties

The therapeutic properties of Chamomile Roman oil include: analgesic, anti-spasmodic, antiseptic, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-infectious, anti-depressant, anti-neuralgic, carminative, vulnerary, sedative, nervine, digestive, tonic and digestive.

The therapeutic properties of Chamomile German oil include: analgesic, anti-spasmodic, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, emmenagogue, digestive, hepatic and vulnerary.

Uses

Roman chamomile oil can be used for the following: Pain reliever: muscle aches and pains, rheumatism, headaches, migraine, neuralgia, toothache and ear-ache.

Skin problems: acne, eczema, rashes, wounds, dermatitis, dry itchy skin and allergic conditions in general.

Relaxes and soothes: the nerves, digestive system and gynecological conditions. For babies: diluted it soothes an irritated and teething baby, helps for colic, diarrhea and gastric spasms.

German chamomile oil can be used for the following: Anti-inflammatory agent: inflamed joints, excessive heat in the muscles and inflammation of the bowel.

Pain reliever: muscle spasms, rheumatism, arthritis and menstrual disorders.

Skin problems: rashes, acne, eczema, psoriasis, hypersensitive skin and allergic conditions.
